Without telling anyone, BTMI! brain trust Jeff Rosenstock managed to record, mix, master and release this seven-song EP in five days. After the band's brilliant 2009 full-length, Scrambles, dropping an EP out of nowhere was a fun, bold and pretty punk move. And thankfully, it also kicks ass. Making up for the upstroke-free Scrambles, much of Adults plays within the conventions of the former ska sound that BTMI!, as well as Rosenstock's former band (the Arrogant Sons of Bitches), used to pump out so successfully. Thankfully, the result is honest rather than cheesy, an earnest return to the band's roots meant to surprise fans rather than appease them. Admittedly, the ska songs aren't always as awesome as tracks like "All Ages Show," a Pinkerton-drenched epic that's one of Rosenstock's strongest songwriting moments ever (that's saying a lot for a guy this prolific). It's great, the ethic is admirable and it's free to download. You love it.
