Montreal's Blxck Cxsper has unveiled their upcoming self-titled album with its title track, which serves as more of a theme song than a single.

The record — a multi-media project self-described as "50 shades of trap" — is slated to be released on August 26 through their own label Trans Trenderz, which released holiday mixtape It's a Very Trans Christmas in 2020.

Lead track "blxck cxsper" serves as an entry-level point to a grander world: one that introduces us to the fictional vigilante Blxck Cxsper in their darker, grittier cinematic universe. It mixes various sub-genres of trap music for an expansive look into a dimension where racism and systemic oppression directly impact superhero culture.

The non-binary rapper, an Exclaim! New Faves alum, produces music to bridge the gap between cultural differences. "As an artist, if I want to get through to people, I have to be smart," they said of the single, acknowledging how prejudice can stunt growth for queer, trans and BIPOC musicians.

But innovation is their calling card, and BLXCK CASPER marks their most ambitious project yet.
