Bloodshot Records has been acquired by Exceleration Music, an investment fund founded earlier this year that looks to enhance "the future of independent labels and artists."
News of the acquisition follows days after Bloodshot co-founder Rob Miller shared that he was stepping away from the label. Miller's departure followed the 2019 resignation of co-founder Nan Warshaw, who left the label after former Bloodshot artist Lydia Loveless accused her partner of years of "casual predation."
A press release notes that Exceleration "struck a deal" with Miller and Warshaw to acquire the label, and will "assume full operational control of the label" from this point forward. New ownership will "ensure that all commitments to the Bloodshot artists are met," while also teasing "a long-term campaign to revitalize the presence and availability of the Bloodshot catalogue both digitally and physically."
"Bloodshot is a vitally important part of American music history, a genre-defining label founded on passion and vision, dedicated to bringing a unique set of artists from its musical orbit to the world," Dave Hansen, an Exceleration partner, shared in the press release. "It represents exactly the kind of company that fits Exceleration's founding ethos, which is to preserve and enhance the legacies of extraordinary independent companies and artists. We are honoured to have the chance to work with the music from Bloodshot's artists, to make sure the future interests of those artists are protected. We look forward to working to keep the Bloodshot history alive and relevant for many years to come."
Bloodshot's catalogue includes releases from Murder By Death, Laura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers, Justin Townes Earle, Lydia Loveless, Ha Ha Tonka, Andre Williams and many more.
Since its founding this past January, Exceleration Music has acquired jazz label Candid Records, and has partnered with Chicago's Alligator Records and the Ray Charles Foundation.
