Billy the Kid Announces Frank Turner-produced LP 'Horseshoes & Hand Grenades'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jul 28, 2014

Vancouver solo artist Billy the Kid (a.k.a. Billy Pettinger) has navigated both the folk and punk worlds since popping up back in the late '90s, so it only makes sense that the singer-songwriter turned to fellow genre-crosser Frank Turner to produce her latest LP, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades.

Following a few crowd-sourced independent release, the new LP is due September 8 through Pettinger's new label home Xtra Mile. In addition to Turner's producing role, the UK artist backs up Pettinger throughout the 13-song set, along with drummer Nigel Powell (the Sleeping Souls). The album was primarily tracked live in the studio.

"I definitely took Frank's lead as far as how to approach the recording process," Pettinger explained in a statement. "Eventually it became apparent that we were a pretty good team but he came up with the concept of recording 'live off the floor' which I think contributed a lot to the finished product… I just think it sounds badass."

Recent single "Back to You" appears on the song cycle, though Billy the Kid is now previewing the platter with pop-rock opener "Phone Bills." You'll find the song, as well as Horsehoes & Hand Grenades' tracklisting and info on an upcoming tour with Billy Bragg, down below.
