Billy Corgan has been climbing his way through the ranks of the wrestling industry for several years now, and he's just made another upwards move. The Smashing Pumpkins singer has just been named the president of Impact Ventures, the company responsible for TNA Wrestling and Impact Wrestling.
News of Corgan's promotion arrived today (August 12) through now-outgoing president Dixie Carter, who now becomes chair and chief strategy officer of Impact. Corgan had previously been appointed senior producer at TNA in 2015 and crafted the "Roustabout" theme song for Impact Wrestling that same year. Being that Corgan's a longtime fan and follower of scripted grappling, the company thinks he's a great choice for the presidential role.
"Billy is a visionary, an iconic artist and savvy businessman with an incredibly gifted creative mind," Carter explained in a statement. "He has built a decades-long successful global brand, and also has a deep passion and understanding for professional wrestling."
She added of the new president's work ethic: "He has impressed me to the point that I've been in discussions with him to take an elevated strategic leadership role within the company. The more we discussed our vision for the organization, the clearer it became that position needed to match his commitment."
Though details are slim on where he'll take the company, Corgan noted optimistically that the wrestling brand is currently growing.
"I am committed to this great opportunity and will use all of my resources and connections to drive the success of this company," he said. "This year we have made significant strides in establishing a strong foundation for our future and will be aggressive in continuing to evolve and grow the Impact brands."
Outside of wrestling, Corgan's other big plan is to issue an upcoming solo album. There had also been word of a proper reunion from the classic lineup of the Smashing Pumpkins, but the band leader clarified this week that this is still only a rumour at this point.
"It's kind of interesting, I did a Facebook post the other day and I literally said what I just said to you: 'now we're making some big plans,' and suddenly the next thing you know it's reunion rumours everywhere. I didn't say anything about any reunion. So, um, I don't know where that's coming from."
