Big Business

Quadruple Single

BY Mike SimpsonPublished Jul 23, 2011

Out of the triad of the most notable sludgy-but-accessible bands with recently released output (the other two being Torche and Helms Alee), Big Business stand as the most formidable of the bunch. This is chiefly thanks to the impressive bellowing of frontman Jared Warren, whose delivery continues in the fashion of being over-the-top in the most heartfelt way possible. Quadruple Single walks a solid middle course between the Melvins-inspired, anthemic sludge of Mind the Drift and newer, more direct and emphatic territory, as on the album's closing track. Anyone familiar with the band's insane/light-hearted aesthetic will know to take the chorus line "guns are better than everything else" with a grain of salt. However, with the heavy-hitting, maniacal drumming of Coady Willis and the twisted guitar ambience of Toshi Kasai and Scott Martin pushed more to the front than previously, one can make no mistake that Big Business do in fact, well, mean business.
