Ben Kunder

'Golden' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 19, 2015

Singer-songwriter Ben Kunder may have settled back into his hometown of Toronto, but only after spending time across our vast Canadian nation — from living in a solar-powered cabin on Salt Spring Island, BC, to working out east in Charlottetown, PEI. Now, he's ready to unveil his latest musical project, which arrives in the form of new album titled Golden. It's out next week, but Exclaim! has got you covered with an advanced stream of the new record.

Kunder has been writing and self-producing music for the last eight years, though for Golden he enlisted the help of a few special guests. It was recorded at Toronto's Lincoln County Social Club with co-producer John Dinsmore of NQ Arbuckle. Other contributors on the album include guitarist-keyboardist Brian Murphy (Alvvays), members of Ladies of the Canyon, and drummer Rich Knox (Danko Jones).

The new set of songs runs the gamut from folk tales of the road ("Travelling," "Love on the Run") to more rock-tinged numbers like the title track and "Trailhead" to softer, ballad-esque numbers like "Love and Motion" and "Don't Dance," allowing Kunder to show his range as a writer and performer.

At times jangly, at times swathed in the blues, but always sincere, Golden serves as a fine introduction to the Canadian musician. The album is out May 26, but you can get acquainted with it right now in the player below. Kunder will celebrate the album's release with a show at Toronto's Dakota Tavern on May 27, and you can see all his upcoming dates below.
