What makes Beast Rest Forth Mouth (the second LP from indie greenhorns Bear in Heaven) so engaging is their ability to use musical influences (Krautrock, '90s indie and post-rock) as simple paint strokes. Beast Rest Forth Mouth: Remixed, included as a bonus disc (or MP3s) with the album's re-release, demonstrates just how well this approach lends itself to the art of the remix. This is why High Places ("Drug a Wheel"), Justin K. Broadrick ("Dust Cloud") and Studio's ("You Do You") remixes sound like original compositions, as each track maintains the artists' atmosphere. But it's the up-and-comers that leave their mark, with Philly's Pink Skull giving "Wholehearted Mess" a chirpy, animated facelift, while Brooklyn's BRAHMS transform "Fake Out" into a no-holds-barred club banger. But it's the Field's sprawling, multifarious remix of "Ultimate Satisfaction" that perfectly exemplifies why Beast Rest Forth Mouth: Remixed works so well: the stock material pulls you in, but the hired hands keep you listening.
