Swedish trio Bask creates inventive music from an eclectic mix of original and traditional compositions. Their unique instrumental combinations range from fiddle, flute and talking drum in “Minuet from Skallsjo,” “Endless Valet Polska” and “Geese in the Rye” to the uncanny replication of bagpipes by soprano and fiddle in “Endless Valet Polska,” “Eagle/The Bear” and “Klavaheilagt.” Sten Kallman’s baritone sax combines memorably with Jonas Simonson’s various flutes to energise almost half of these tunes. Bask’s intricate interplay enlarges the dynamic scope of Scandinavia’s vital contemporary folk traditions.
