Bad Tits

Garbage Night

In the wake of Toronto, ON dance punk outfit Death From Above 1979's break-up in 2006, the duo's "dance" member quickly settled into his electronic project, MSTRKRFT. The band's "punk" side (known formally as Sebastien Grainger) has had a rougher time finding his post-DFA1979 musical niche, but his latest attempt is undeniably his most successful. On their first EP, Bad Tits (Grainger and Josh Reichmann, formerly of the Tangiers) have crafted a sound that's at once familiar and fresh. It's the closest Grainger has come to recreating the sound of his most successful band, but one can hardly accuse him of rehashing previous work. Garbage Night is more cerebral than anything Death From Above ever did, demonstrating Grainger's ability to take the best characteristics of his work as Sebastian Grainger and the Mountains and turn them into something more potent. For example, the seismic tempo shifts and patient layering of EP highlight "Consider Yourself Crazy" or the rhythmic immediacy and stark minimalism of "Bankok Hilton." No, Grainger hasn't blown minds in awhile, but if there's a full-length in the works as good as Garbage Night hints, he will soon.
