Bachelorette

As far as opening lyrics go, "The future's disquieting" certainly is a mood setter. That's how Bachelorette songstress Annabel Alpers begins her self-titled third LP, as lead track "Grow Old with Me" fades in with a dreamy wash of looping, ambient synths. And while this sets a sombre tone for the 11-song collection, it's by no means bleak or hopeless. These meditative tracks are filled with gorgeously lush electro-baroque arrangements and bolstered by Alpers' breathy coos, making her gloomy sentiments sound comforting and cathartic. Even "Blanket," with its talk of drinking, pharmaceuticals and "the hole in my chest," sounds oddly inviting, with its peppy percussion loops and buzz-y synths. Elsewhere, the major key melodies of "Generous Spectre" offer consolation for the fact that the song is actually a self-critical tale of isolation. With its warm, reflective tone, Bachelorette will help soften the blow of your darkest moments.
