Awesome Color

Electric Aborigines

The latest release from this Brooklyn power trio starts off on a promising note, with blasts of feedback, frantic rhythms and strong grooves, but it hits a handful of uneven spots as the album progresses. Early tracks such as "Eyes of Light,” "Already Down” and "Step Up” build on the wonderfully stoned, repetitive riffs from the group’s debut. The middle of the album, however, starts to stray into excessive classic rock territory. A handful of songs sound as if the band are ready to break into a perfect rendition of Mountain's "Mississippi Queen” without batting an eye. The overkill of too many meandering guitar solos distracts from the band’s otherwise hypnotic sounds. On Electric Aborigines, Awesome Color show off a heavy jam band approach that largely ditches the group’s honed, Stooges-like pummelling for more straight-up blues rock.
