One of the most exciting new releases in the drug rock genre has to be this self-titled debut from New Jersey's Atomic Bitchwax. Really nothing more than a side project for Monster Magnet guitarist Ed Mundell, the Bitchwax is miles better than anything his other band has done in years. Heavily entrenched in ‘70s power trio fare (think Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain and live James Gang), the 11 originals offered here (along with covers of Tommy Bolin and their label mates Core), really hit the spot. The songwriting is built around Mundell's great wah-wah soloing, letting his guitar take centre stage.
