A Hundred Dry Trees

BY Darren EkePublished Jun 1, 2004

Jérome Deuson cuts a fitting mix of beauty and destruction on his debut release for the Intr_version label. The Belgian native embraces layers of guitar frequencies, constructing tonal narratives that leave the listener content yet feeling uneasy at the same time. But this is a good thing. Digital guitar loops pan left and right as a steady pulse chugs along with a distorted beat in the opener, "Trouver Les Mots.” As gentle guitar melodies emit a peaceful calm, jagged vocal samples indicate this euphoric bubble may burst at any moment. Deuson’s construction of guitar loops — from static highs to pulsating lows — provide a rhythmic ticket that allows listeners to hop onto this delicate wave and ride it across eight ethereal tracks.
