A year after first announcing plans to renovate its jazz section into a marijuana dispensary, Amoeba Music's 420-friendly business model for its flagship location in Berkeley, CA, has just been green lit.
While the plan had initially been rejected in the fall of 2015, Amoeba employee Debby Goldsberry revealed over Facebook this month [via FACT] that the long-running store on Berkeley's famous Telegraph Avenue has now been awarded a permit to sell marijuana. An launch date has yet to be cemented, but pending a few months of approval and processing, the Berkeley Compassionate Care Center will open inside Amoeba.
"I am beyond excited," Goldsberry wrote in the post, which included a photo of a phonograph player shooting out weed leaves. "We are planning the most epic dispensary ever at the Amoeba location on Telegraph. The dispensary will go where the jazz room is now. My mind is kind of blown right now!"
Back when Amoeba first announced its wish to open a marijuana dispensary, store co-owner David Prinz had noted that this would be a business model to help keep the store afloat.
"We need supplemental income," he told the East Bay Express. "That's the real truth. This helps keep us open and enables us to do some amazing shit."
He added: "Weed can help save music — absolutely. Here's a way."
While Amoeba's Berkeley location is looking to enjoying high times in the future, it was reported that the building that holds the independent music chain's Hollywood store was recently sold. While plans had surfaced that suggested a highrise could be put in its place, the store assured fans that this is "several years" away.
