American Analog Set Offshoot the Wooden Birds Kick Off Tour, Play Vancouver

BY Brock ThiessenPublished May 27, 2009

While it was a definite bummer when American Analog Set threw in the towel a few years back, it's good to see the band's Andrew Kenny is keeping busy. Just the other week, the former AmAnSet leader saw the release of his debut full-length Magnolia by his new outfit, the Wooden Birds. Haven't heard it? Well, in a nutshell, the band pick up where American Analog Set left off, only minus the keyboards and with a whole lot more acoustic instruments leading the show. Yeah, okay, there's a bit more to Kenny's new band than that but if you want to fill in the blanks, you can go hit up the band's North American tour, which kicks off tonight in fact.

This evening, the Wooden Birds will slowly rock Phoenix, AZ before they begin making the rounds across the States, swinging through such cities as Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago and Brooklyn. And while the tour is definitely a U.S.-heavy one, the band are making one Canadian stop in Vancouver, where they'll play the city's Media Club on June 2.

Along with the surge of Wooden Birds activity, there have recently been rumblings in the old American Analog Set camp as well. On Morr's freshly released Kiwi pop tribute comp, Not Given Lightly: A Tribute to the Giant Golden Book of New Zealand's Alternative Music Scene, the now-defunct AmAnSet dusted off an old cover of the Clean's "Anything Could Happen," while the Wooden Birds also contributed a cover of the Bats' "Afternoon in Bed."

And if you're after more than just one newly released AmAnSet track, the band put out another singles comp a little while back titled Hard to Find: Singles and Unreleased 2000 - 2005. This digital-only release gathers up a selection of hard-to-find and previously unreleased tracks from the band's later period, including the songs featured on the stellar tour-only twelve-inch sold on the group's last road trip in 2005.
