Alexisonfire Offshoot Black Lungs Return with New Deranged Seven-Inch

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Nov 16, 2010

It's been a while since Wade MacNeil focused on his Black Lungs project. Back in 2008, the Alexisonfire guitarist released Send Flowers, a collection that brought his ragged vocals to the forefront, trading quick-licked screamo for a more polished pop rock sound. It was pleasant enough, but the musician's brand new seven-inch suggests he's done with plinking piano numbers. Dude just wants to rock out these days.

The two-song single features two punked-up cuts. "Valley of the Dolls" takes up the A-side, while "Stay Outta Parkdale" is the focus on the flip. Both songs pummel with spirit of '77 guitar riffs. Maybe it's the company he's hanging with -- Career Suicide/Fucked Up member Jonah Falco pounds the skins on both tracks -- or maybe it's the record's release on BC punk label Deranged (the Tranzmitors, White Lung) that upped the aggressiveness in MacNeil, but either way, Black Lungs has become an entirely different beast.

The "Valley of the Dolls" single is available now on iTunes and will be released on vinyl November 23 by Deranged in a limited run of 500 copies. Try snagging a copy at an upcoming release show in Toronto on November 20 at Sneaky Dee's.
