In its original form, Whitney Houston's 1987 hit "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" was a joyous pop anthem, but Vancouver songwriter Alexandria Maillot has put a very different spin on it with a new cover version.
This version is much slower than buoyant original, with the bright synths replaced by cavernous, reverb-doused guitar strums and supported by a slow, slinky beat. This aching, balladic version gives the lyrics a very different emotional impact.
An announcement describes this version as being about a "user reminiscing of their very first high, and the ensuing affair of finding a parallel sensation with each succeeding fix." Take a listen below.
Maillot is planning a spring tour to be followed by a two-volume EP in the summer. Stay tuned for further information.
