Alessandro Cortini Returns with New Album 'SCURO CHIARO'
Hear "CHIAROSCURO" from the follow-up to 'VOLUME MASSIMO'
Published Mar 10, 2021After turning it up to 11 on 2019's VOLUME MASSIMO, Alessandro Cortini has shared details of a new album. The onetime Nine Inch Nails member will deliver SCURO CHIARO on June 11 through Mute.
The eight-song SCURO CHIARO is said to find Cortini continuing the creative process developed with VOLUME MASSIMO, scouring his archive of personal recordings to find sounds and elements with which to compose.
"To me things that were created apart in time can fit together in a work of art, and it doesn't matter when they were created," said Cortini of his method in a statement. "You drink wine that is ten years old with a meal that is freshly handmade. The final product, in my opinion, doesn't need to be made at the same time."
"CHIAROSCURO" is the first track to arrive from the record, and you can hear it alongside a video directed by Marco Ciceri with CGI by Ciceri and Axel Schoterman.
Cortini said of the single, "It represents the record, where I was and where I am emotionally," he reveals. "It's to do with the conscious decision about trying to be positive, of striving for happiness while accepting the fact that happiness is not all positive."
The album is also said to feature sound created using prototypes of Strega, Cortini's effects unit developed alongside MakeNoise that he describes as "a successful attempt to condense my sonic aesthetic into a music making box."
As for the album's title, SCURO CHIARO is a play on the term for heavily contrasting light and shadow in painting and other visual arts. Cortini explains, "SCURO CHIARO is the opposite of chiaroscuro [the use of light and shadow to give strong contrast], and in a way it shows that no matter how you order things there's always going to be two elements that tend to be the opposite of each other that make up the truth — or make up everything."
Last year, Cortini teamed with Daniel Avery for collaborative album Illusion of Time.
