Akwaaba

Do It Tomorrow

BY Marc RoyPublished Feb 1, 2001

The word Akwaaba means "welcome," in the Ghanaian language of Twi. This release by the musical collective of the same name embraces you with a feel good vibe, full of African rhythms and disco grooves. From the same school as Faze Action's release Moving Cities, Akwaaba use live instruments to create down-tempo, organic house music that crosses all borders. After a rather weak opening track, "Phlox," the album settles into a nice mid-tempo tribal groove with tracks "Spandex," "Reasonable Sensible," "Cosmic Love" and "Get Yong'un" laying down fat disco bass lines with sublime percussion straight from the deepest darkest Africa. Funkalicious.
