It might seem counterintuitive to make club music for home use, but it isn't half as weird as making club music for mornings spent meditatively walking in a misty forest. Yet, it's the challenge that Akasha System's Hunter P. Thompson meets with his new LP Echo Earth, extrapolating on a genre he has coined "echo- techno."
Given its mission, one might expect the record to use a palette of organic found sounds and foley, but in continuation with the producer's previous releases, Echo Earth is all analogue drum machines and warm synth tones. It sources its inspiration from nature, rather than aping it. It seems like an oxymoron to call dance music chill, but tracks like "Sunken Relics" and the album highlight "Hawk Country" are good examples of elements, such as a bouncy bass or a hatched hi-hat pattern, being decontextualized to create an enveloping mood.
Without compromises, Echo Earth washes over the listener, slowly but surely pulling them in their maze of plunky keys and hypnotic drums. Like a good hiking trip, it gives one a respite from our urban jungle, if only for a moment.
