Thunder Bay, ON-born, Montreal, QC-based musician Adam Waito is returning with Adam & the Amethysts' sophomore album Flickering Flashlight. The record isn't out until October, but you can hear it in its entirety now on Exclaim.ca.
The follow-up to 2008's Amethyst Amulet, this record features "texturally complex" layers, with Waito playing most of the instruments featured on the songs. He is assisted by Rebecca Lessard (vocals/cello) and fellow Montreal drummers Nathan Ward and Jordan Robson Cramer.
According to a press release, "The overarching theme is less a longing for a long-lost and mythologized past, but more a reverence for the present."
Constantly paying homage to his home country, the Canadiana-tinged record features folksy tunes like "The Country" and "Adam Called Me Over Christmas," in addition to funkier tracks like "Gitche Gumee Yeah Yeah."
In support of the album, Adam & the Amethysts have lined up several Canadian dates, which you can see below. These include stops at Pop Montreal later this week, and shows with Library Voices and Pink Moth. You can also pre-order Flickering Flashlight here on CD and LP, and get the digital version instantly upon purchase.
