Lord of the Underground: Vishnu and the Magic Elixir

BY Bryon HayesPublished Jul 14, 2009

Kowabata Makoto must eat, breathe and sweat psychedelia! He and his band of magical space rangers (known on this planet as Acid Mothers Temple) have released a seemingly endless stream of missives from the land of Lysergia, and show no signs of letting up. Vishnu and the Magic Elixir is the fourth AMT release from Montreal's Alien8 imprint and it's rife with Kraut-inspired psychedelic mayhem. Opening track "Eleking the Clay" finds a ripping groove and runs with it; Makoto's guitar must have practically melted in his hands as it was laid to tape. Bass player Atsushi Tsuyama wrote the shorter second piece, the gorgeous "Sorcerer's Stone of the Magi." Utilizing a plethora of acoustic instruments of Eastern origins, this track reveals a gentler, almost folksy AMT. The epic title track, which closes out this monster record, takes its time developing into a hornet's nest of psychedelic excess. It's a perfect ending to a whale of a ride!
