Back in 2019, accomplished metal drummer Gene Hoglan shared how he had a "real, positive feeling" for the future of Dethklok ahead of the band playing their first show in five years that November. It appears his optimism about the group's next steps was warranted, now sharing that new music is in the works.
MetalSucks points out how Hoglan recently answered some questions from metal podcast Sobre La Dosis via celebrity-centred video sharing app Cameo. Along with some reflections on his career behind the kit to date, Hogland revealed how Dethklok fits in to his own future musical plans following his departure from Testament earlier this year.
"One of the larger projects that's coming up really directly as well is Dethklok is working on a movie. So that's gonna entail some definite intent from me. You know, I'm deeply involved in that," Hogland shared, referencing Adult Swim's 2021 announcement that the beloved animated headbangers of Metalocalypse would be treated to a film adaptation.
The drummer continued, "So we're working on the next album, the soundtrack — well the movie doesn't quite have a soundtrack to it — but we're gonna have the movie, we're gonna have the album for Dethklok, and I would imagine some touring as well."
Created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, Metalocalypse — which centres on the fictional melodic death metal band Dethklok — aired for four seasons between 2006 and 2012, before it was cancelled by Adult Swim in 2013. A one-hour special, Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem, aired that same year.
In 2019, Hogland shared how "there's been some time since the band has been able to either play shows or attempt to move forward" using the Dethklok moniker due to network ownership rights. Along with bassist Bryan Beller, the drummer and co-creator Small performed the music that appeared in the series and on real-world Dethklock releases: 2007's The Dethalbum, 2009's Dethalbum II, 2012's Dethalbum III and 2013's The Doomstar Requiem – A Klok Opera Soundtrack.
As previously reported, the forthcoming Metalocalypse film from show creators Small and Blancha will have its soundtrack released by WaterTower Music. A release date for the project has yet to be revealed.
