The 3 Knights

Burial Proceedings in the Coarse of 3 Knights Remixes

It takes a dedicated mind to trawl a forgotten UK hip-hop track from the depths of 1990 and get nine old-school artists to remix it twelve times nearly a quarter of a century later, but that's exactly what Stay on Target records have done.

So, who the hell are the 3 Knights, you might ask, and rightly so. As a short-lived crew from a long abandoned musical style, they are known only to die-hard fans and thorough beat diggers. Nonetheless, they've been repackaged with shiny new add-ons courtesy of DJ Tones, Mada, Spatts, Sure Shot and a host of others.

The remixes themselves add plenty of beef, and production-wise, they leave the 90's version in the dust, but these upgrades also suck some of the charm out of the original. With a track like this, coming from that era, you want to hear simple scratching, lame drum kicks and crappy horn samples; anything else just feels wrong. Granted, Mista Bohze's jazzy rework is undeniably slick, but for the most part, the collection is a bit out of place. One thing that this release does do is draw attention to the scores of potential gems that have been lost from this flowering period of UK hip-hop and britcore.
