With coronavirus forcing many film festivals to move online or explore alternative options for physical gatherings, Toronto After Dark Film Festival has opted to cancel its 2020 event entirely.

In a press release from founder Adam Lopez, the annual festival — which focuses on horror, sci-fi, action and cult films — announced that its 15th edition will be pushed back a full year. The next festival will instead take place from October 14 to 22, 2021.

The announcement points out that Toronto After Dark typically brings over 10,000 film-lovers to packed screenings downtown. It states, "This one year postponement better positions Toronto After Dark to return with a much more enjoyable, relaxed, and above all, safe environment for everyone involved in our theatrical event."

In the meantime, TAD is planning to increase its online content and social media giveaways.
