While we patiently wait on the highly anticipated film The Batman, director Matt Reeves is teaming up with Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter and HBO for a new spinoff TV series.
HBO Max has confirmed it will be rolling out an original DC drama set in the Gotham City police department, with the series set in the same world Reeves is crafting for The Batman. The show will be written by Winter, and it promises to explore the world of the upcoming film in greater complexity, with the characters of Gotham populating Reeves's Batman universe.
"This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream," Reeves said in a statement.
At this point, though, it's unclear which characters will appear in the TV series — or if it will even feature Batman himself. It's also unclear then which actors could be appearing in the show.
As previously reported, though, The Batman film will star Robert Pattinson in the title role, in addition to Jeffrey Wright, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard, among others.
After being pushed back due to COVID-19, the film is currently set to arrive on October 1, 2021. And while the HBO TV spinoff doesn't have a release date — or even title — yet, we're guessing it will arrive around the same time as the actual film.
