The sudden death of beloved actress Carrie Fisher last month has left a vast number of movie fans in mourning. While many are looking back on her career, however, there are some people who must look forward — what is Lucasfilm supposed to do with Princess Leia in their future Star Wars movies?
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, insiders have suggested that Disney executives are scrambling to figure out what to do with Fisher's most iconic character. After all, Princess Leia has major scenes in the forthcoming Star Wars films Episode VIII and Episode IX.
While Fisher managed to wrap her Episode VIII scenes before she passed away, she was meant to have an even bigger role in Episode IX. As such, insiders suggest Lucasfilm is scrambling to make a decision.
The script for Episode IX is still being written by director Colin Trevorrow and co-writer Derek Connolly. As such, there are still options available. Trevorrow is set to meet with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy next week to determine the best plan of action.
The main question is whether they'll kill off the character of Princess Leia, or if they'll resort to using CGI like the did with Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin. Of course, the use of CGI to bring back a deceased actor raises moral questions.
Either way, the loss of Carrie Fisher is still looming over the Star Wars franchise. As one insider told THR, "People are still deeply mourning Carrie's death over there."
