'Squid Game: The Challenge' Contestants Threaten Lawsuit Against Producers over Unsafe Set Conditions

The unnamed players say they suffered hypothermia and nerve damage

Contestants from Netflix's newest cash cow Squid Game: The Challenge are threatening to sue the show's co-producers after claiming they suffered from hypothermia and nerve damage as a result of allegedly unsafe conditions on set.

Daniel Slade, CEO of the UK law firm Express Solicitors, is representing the two unnamed players in their potential lawsuit against the production company Studio Lambert.

"We have sent letters of claim on behalf of contestants injured in this show," he shared in a blog post today. "From what we've been told they pushed the boundaries of safety in the name of entertainment … Production companies need to ensure that health and safety standards on their shows don't leave people at risk of harm."

The show, which was shot in the UK, recreates several of the challenges from the Korean-language thriller series Squid Game, including a twisted take on the classic schoolyard game Red Light, Green Light. According to the suing contestants, that's the game during which they suffered injuries.

Accusations of the unsafe set conditions were reported earlier this year, but Netflix strongly rebuked the claims.

"Any suggestion that the competition is rigged or claims of serious harm to players are simply untrue," the company asserted in a statement. "We've taken all the appropriate safety precautions, including after care for contestants — and an independent adjudicator is overseeing each game to ensure it's fair to everyone."

Now, a spokesperson from the show is taking the same stance as before, stating: "No lawsuit has been filed by any of the Squid Game contestants. We take the welfare of our contestants extremely seriously."
