Ryan Grantham, the Canadian actor who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March in the killing of his mother, allegedly had plans to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as well.
A CBC report from Grantham's sentencing in B.C. Supreme Court this week (June 14) revealed detail from prosecutors surrounding the actor's behaviour before and after he killed his 64-year-old mother in their Squamish, BC, townhouse in 2020.
Grantham, known best for his roles in Riverdale and 2010's Diary of a Wimpy Kid, shot Barbara Waite in the head on March 31, 2020. He previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March after initially being charged with first-degree murder.
CBC reports that the court heard how Grantham had rehearsed the killing and had taken videos that were shown during the sentencing, including one in which he confesses to the murder.
The broadcaster reports how prosecutors allege that the following day, Grantham loaded his car with three guns, ammunition, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping supplies and a map to Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, and began driving east, planning to kill Trudeau.
Grantham would not leave the province, turning himself in to Vancouver police that same day. CBC reports that Crown prosecutor Michaela Donnelly said Grantham was going through an intense clinical depression in the months leading up to the murder, referencing two psychiatric reports.
CBC's complete report can be read here.
Grantham, who has acted in film and on television since age nine, has also appeared in Supernatural, iZombie and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
