Mind of Mencia: Uncensored Season 2

BY Thomas QuinlanPublished Apr 20, 2007

Carlos Mencia's Mind of Mencia is like the Mexican version of The Chappelle Show, following a similar format, minus the musical guests. Through a mix of stand-up, sketch comedy and pre-recorded videos, Carlos takes politically incorrect swipes at everything from race and religion to politics and class. But his favourite subject is stupid people, or as Carlos calls them: "retarded” or even simpler, "dee, dee, dee,” his catchphrase. Yeah, sure, he can be offensive but he gives equal time to black, white, gay, straight, Christian, Jew, Muslim or "beaner” and all types in between, poking fun at the acknowledged stereotypes in the process. In the second season, you get the return of cast members like older brother Joseph Mencia and midget comedian Brad Williams, as well as guest appearances from Peter Boyle (Everybody Loves Raymond), Cheech Marin (Cheech & Chong), Mario Lopez (Saved by the Bell) and the WWE’s the Edge. Mind of Mencia may not always be funny but Carlos’s stand up is often on point — his jerky, spastic movements are an impassioned appeal for understanding — and his man-on-the-street video footage never fails. However, his sketches are not always so lucky and his music video parodies are embarrassingly long and grow quickly tiresome. Still, the number of laughs per episode is more than satisfactory, even on the final episode of the season, which has a front-heavy set of serious ranting rather than actual stand-up comedy. The DVD contains plenty of bonus footage, with the addition of deleted scenes, outtakes, a gag reel and an audience Q&A, but that’s about it for special features. Mind of Mencia is perfect for fans disappointed in the loss of The Chappelle Show and should also appeal to those in society not already "dee, dee, dee.”
