We finally have a director for the hugely anticipated sequel to Jim Henson's classic Labyrinth. Today it was confirmed that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson will helm the upcoming fantasy film.
The news was revealed by Deadline, which reports Derrickson will be directing the sequel to Henson's beloved 1986 film, with Maggie Levin (Into the Dark: My Valentine) set to write the script.
The Jim Henson Company is also still very much involved, with the company's Lisa Henson producing and Brian Henson is executive producing.
The news follows early reports about the Labyrinth film from 2017, when director Fede Alvarez — who helmed Don't Breathe and the remake of Evil Dead — had been attached to the project. Now, though, Derrickson will officially take over. The news also comes after Derrickson turned down the chance to direct the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel.
To refresh your memory, the original Labyrinth starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, though so far no casting decisions have been publicly revealed for the sequel.
The Labyrinth sequel will arrive via TriStar Pictures, but no firm premiere date has been revealed. And if you still are having reservations about such a Henson classic getting a sequel, just have a look at how great The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was.
