While we're still no closer to actually watching Gremlins 3, the beloved film franchise is reportedly set to become an animated series.

The news comes via Variety, which reports it has learned of the possible new series from "sources." The show reportedly is in development for WarnerMedia's upcoming streaming service, but Warner Bros. and Amblin — who are said to be producing the series — both declined to comment on the news.

According to Variety, the Gremlins animated series would "be a period piece that would follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played in the films by Keye Luke, as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo."

Tze Chun (Children of Invention, Cold Comes the Night) is said to be tied to the Gremlins series and onboard to write and executive produce.

At this point, no other details are known about the Gremlins series, but if it becomes reality, the show will arrive on WarnerMedia's as-yet-untitled streaming service.

Director Joe Dante first brought Gremlins to life in 1984, with the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch arriving in 1990. If you missed Gremlins 2, you can get up to speed here.

While rumours of Gremlins 3 have been swirling for years, there is still no sign of any sort of actual release. However, with the possible animated series seeming to be around the corner, you might want to start refreshing yourself on those three rules.
