'Goodnight Mommy' Is Getting an American Remake Starring Naomi Watts

Back in 2014, Austrian horror flick Goodnight Mommy made quite the impression. Now, as is so often the case, we're getting an American remake of the film, but this one will be led by Naomi Watts.

The remake is coming courtesy of Amazon Studios, Variety reports, with the streamer teaming up with Animal Kingdom and production company Playtime.

Matt Sobel (Take Me to the River) will be directing the Watts-led remake, with a script coming from Kyle Warren. Goodnight Mommy's original directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz (who later directed The Lodge) will serve as executive producers.

If you slept on the original, Goodnight Mommy tells the story of two twin brothers who come face to face with a mother suddenly covered in bandages,  supposedly from a recent surgical procedure. With the bandages covering the mother's face and her behaviour becoming increasingly erratic and strange, the boys soon begin to believe she's not actually their mother and an imposter.

We'll stop explaining the plot there, but trust us — the original film was quite something and more than a little shocking.

"My favourite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist's journey," said Sobel in a statement. "In our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy, fear of abandonment — and the dreadful realization that those close to us may not be who they seem — create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center. I can't wait to create this heart-stopping story with Amazon and the peerless Naomi Watts."

So far, it's unclear when the American remake of Goodnight Mommy will see release.
