'Game of Thrones' Prequel About House Targaryen Reportedly in the Works
Published Sep 13, 2019Game of Thrones fans may be feeling a void in their life since the series ended (badly) earlier this year, but they could be getting another affiliated series soon. A prequel exploring the origins of House Targaryen is reportedly in the works.
According to Deadline, Game of Thrones author/co-executive producer George R.R. Martin and Colony co-creator/executive producer Ryan Condal are close to securing a pilot order for a series focused on the House Targaryen, set 300 years before the original series.
The House Targaryen series is reportedly based on Martin's 2018 book Fire & Blood and has been in the works with HBO since last fall.
It's one of five spinoffs based on scripts commissioned by HBO in 2017, and replaces a script originally helmed by Bryan Cogman, who confirmed earlier this year that his prequel idea was not going forward.
In May, Martin confirmed that there are five successor shows in the works at HBO and said that "three of them are still moving forward nicely."
One of the other spinoffs is a prequel set 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, chronicling the descent from the Age of Heroes. It was written by Jane Goldman, and a pilot was shot with Naomi Watts earlier this year.
Martin previously referred to that project as "the one I am not supposed to call The Long Night."
