Disney+ to Crack Down on Password Sharing in Canada

The new agreement suggests the streamer might implement a more expensive tier for extra users

Streaming services have been waging their crusade on affordability for a while now, between raising prices across the board and introducing tiered platforms with ads.

Disney+ is the latest perpetrator, following in Netflix's footsteps by promising to crack down on password sharing.

The entertainment giant sent an email to Canadian subscribers today announcing that, effective November 1, it will be restricting users' ability to share their passwords with people outside of their households, writing: "We're implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your household."

The email didn't reveal much more information, but Disney+ is hinting at the idea of implementing tiered accounts in the new agreement.

"Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household," reads the "account sharing" section of the agreement.

If it does end up separating its accounts into tiers, the company would once again be following Netflix, which charges $7.99 extra to add a member to a plan, and Prime Video, which is gearing up to charge an extra $2.99 for ad-free streaming in 2024.
