Comedy Icon Carl Reiner Dead at 98

He was the comedic brains behind 'The Jerk,' 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' and 'Oh God'

Prolific comedy legend Carl Reiner has died at the age of 98. According to his publicist, Reiner died of natural causes Monday night (June 29) at his Beverly Hills home.

This morning, his son, director Rob Reiner, posted, "Last night my dad passed away. As I write this my heart is hurting. He was my guiding light." Carl Reiner's achievements were many. He created and starred in The Dick Van Dyke Show, he directed movies like Oh God with George Burns and The Jerk with Steve Martin, and helmed countless other movies and television shows.

Along with his close friend Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner co-wrote and appeared on the Sid Caesar shows Caesar's Hour and Your Show of Shows, both of which were integral in the development of modern sketch comedy.

Most recently, he made an appearance as a voice actor in Toy Story 4. He had also appeared in shows like Two and a Half MenHot in Cleveland and House.

Carl is survived by his three children, one of whom is director Rob Reiner.
