Cineplex Plans to Open Six Theatre Locations in Alberta This Month

The chain then plans to gradually reopen more

A handful of small cinemas opened their doors in British Columbia this past weekend, including Victoria's the Vic Theatre and locations of Hollywood 3 Cinemas throughout White Rock, Surrey, Pitt Meadows and Duncan. Now, it's time for the big leagues to play ball — Cineplex will open six locations by the end of the month.

The massive Canadian theatre chain will begin showing movies in six Alberta locations on June 26. From there, on July 3, it will start showing movies across the country.

Cineplex will put into place new measures including reserved seating in all auditoriums and staggered showtimes to reduce congestion in the lobby. The company added that it expects COVID-19 to have "a prolonged negative impact on Cineplex's operations."

Cineplex's 164 theatres have been closed across Canada since mid-March.

Meanwhile, the company is also dealing with the fallout of its previously reported $2.8 billion acquisition from the U.K. company Cineworld. Cineworld alleged that Cineplex had broken some unspecified terms of the deal, although Cineplex has denied any wrongdoing and plans to sue Cineworld.

How all of this this will affect those weird animated popcorn guys is yet to be seen.
