'Black Panther' Director Ryan Coogler Thanks Moviegoers in Heartfelt Letter

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Feb 21, 2018

Black Panther has already cemented itself as one of the year's major blockbusters, garnering excellent reviews and raking in more than $400 million USD since it opened this past weekend — making it the highest grossing February release of all time. Now, director Ryan Coogler has responded to the overwhelming show of support with a heartfelt open letter.

In it, he expressed gratitude for all the people that have seen and praised the film so far, adding that he and his wife have been moved to tears multiple times as they've watched moviegoers celebrate their own heritage, take photos with posters and dance in theatre lobbies.

"Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a film about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent," he wrote. "Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong."

He goes on to thank the enthusiastic fans, the press who encouraged people to see the film and the young kids who came out with their parents and friends.

Naturally, Coogler signs off with a "P.S. Wakanda Forever."
