Veteran actor and filmmaker Alan Arkin has died. He was 89.

His sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony confirmed his death in a statement, saying, "Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed."

He died in California on Thursday (June 29). A cause of death has not been given.

The Brooklyn-born Arkin had a long and successful film and TV career dating back to the '60s. He earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in 1966's The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. He got another Best Actor nomination for 1968's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter — but didn't win an Academy Award until 2006's Little Miss Sunshine, which earned him Best Supporting Actor. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for 2013's Argo.

Arkin also directed a few films, notably including 1971's Little Murders and 1977's Fire Sale.

He continued acting into his 80s, appearing in 2019's Dumbo, voicing a character in 2022's Minions: The Rise of Gru, and earning two Emmy nominations for his role in The Kominsky Method from 2018 to 2019.

Arkin is survived by his three children and his wife of 27 years, Suzanne Newlander.
