Tina Fey Confirms 'Mean Girls' Is Getting Made Into a Musical

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 7, 2016

Tina Fey recently declared it a "terrible time" for women in comedy, but that's not stopping the actor, writer and producer from capitalizing on the legacy of her 2004 hit flick Mean Girls. In a move that will hopefully overshadow the ill-fated 2011 film sequel, Mean Girls will return once again — but this time as a musical.

At a press conference for the recently released Whiskey Tango Foxtrot earlier today (March 7), Fey revealed that wheels have been put in motion for a theatrical stage production of the high school cult classic. Few details were revealed, but the comedian did say that she'd been "working on it" with her composer husband Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin. Benjamin's previous credits include adapting Legally Blonde into a broadway hit.

The original Mean Girls movie starred Fey alongside Saturday Night Live alumni Amy Poehler, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, and well as at the time up-and-coming actresses like Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lizzy Caplan

Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming musical as they become available. And no, this isn't an excuse for you to keep trying to make "fetch" happen.
