Norm Macdonald died last year after a nearly decade-long private battle with cancer. However, it's been revealed that in the months leading to his death, Macdonald was working on material for a Netflix special called Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special.

And now, Netflix has announced plans to release the special in a non-traditional form — because Macdonald never had the opportunity to test his new material on a live audience, Nothing Special will consist of a private, home-recorded set from Macdonald.

According to his longtime friend and producing partner Lori Jo Hoekstra, Macdonald recorded the routine before heading into the hospital in 2020.

"His test results were not good, so during the heart of COVID-19 pandemic and literally the night before going in for a procedure, he wanted to get this on tape just in case — as he put it — things went south," Hoekstra told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was his intention to have a special to share if something happened."

Macdonald recorded the set in a single take in his living room. About a year later, he asked Hoekstra to find the tape as his condition worsened.

Netflix will release Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special on May 30, and it'll include tributes from the likes of Adam Sandler, Conan O'Brien, Dave Chappelle, Molly ShannonDavid Letterman and David Spade
