Rufus Wainwright Says Madonna Has "Been Quite Mean to Me a Couple of Times"

"I was ignored by her at a very small event where there were only a few people. It was just bizarre, and very rude in general"

All these years in the spotlight later, Madonna remains an enigma. Do robot centipedes actually crawl out of her vagina? Was her old house really sold by a dog? Did she really mop a movie theatre because she loved Licorice Pizza so much? Is this a two-truths-and-a-lie situation?

Anyway, we're left with a lot of questions — but American-Canadian baroque pop singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright has spoken his truth about the Queen of Pop and, well, it hurts.

In conversation with the UK's Attitude Magazine, Wainwright disclosed that Madge has been "quite mean" to him "a couple of times."

When telling the publication's Jamie Tabberer about meeting his "Pride heroes" Shirley Bassey, Carol Channing and Barbra Streisand, the interviewer asked if he had met Madonna. And of course, he had, but she simply isn't one of his Pride heroes.

"Um… Look, I'm fascinated by Madonna, as is the universe," Wainwright began, clearly a bit caught off-guard. "I've had evenings with her. Nothing extensive, but little run-ins with her over the years, and she's never been particularly… I'm on a weird part of her radar! I'm not quite a target, but I'm not a refuge either. Whatever."

Everything about Madonna continues to be shrouded in mystery! Thankfully, the singer-songwriter offered a bit more about his tenuous relationship with the icon.

"We've never had a great thing," he said. "But I admire her tenacity, and some of her songs are great. But she's been quite mean to me a couple of times. But it's like, join the list." Of people who've been mean to him, or people she's been mean to?

When pressed further, Wainwright elaborated again:

With her, as with certain other celebrities of that magnitude, they have a real tunnel vision. At intimate things she just doesn't acknowledge me, doesn't really see me. There was one little incident where she may have held something against me slightly, because I worked with someone who used to work for her, and they ended up leaving her: some political thing. But [people like her] have these blinders on, so they don't see context. I was ignored by her at a very small event where there were only a few people. It was just bizarre, and very rude in general. I'm not like that. You acknowledge everybody in the room, a little bit.

Madonna has quite notably had incidences of refusing to work with someone based on their astrological sign (she's a classic Leo, while Wainwright is a Cancer), so none of these claims seem to require much of an imaginative stretch.

Perhaps the pop star getting blocked from Instagram Live was karma coming back around. Or it was just because she was posting full-frontal? Whatever.
