Brooklyn-based collective Zs have been serving up head-scratching avant jazz since the turn of the century, with their lineup and sound evolving significantly over the last decade. With the group celebrating their tenth anniversary this year, they've decided to shine the spotlight on their early days via the upcoming box set, Score -- The Complete Sextet Works: 2002-2007.
A press release explains that the four-CD box set drops September 11 through Northern Spy. As the collection's title suggests, the package contains recordings from the outfit's sextet period. The first three discs feature work like their 2003 self-titled debut EP, 2007's Arms LP, and assorted live takes, remixes and singles. A fourth disc, meanwhile, features previously unreleased music. You can stream selections from each disc in the player down below.
The package will come housed in a box featuring artwork by design team Fredericks & Mae, and inside you'll find a 20-page booklet and printed sleeves for each disc.
Zs will celebrate the release of Score -- The Complete Sextet Works: 2002-2007 with a launch party at Brooklyn's 285 Kent. Furthering the group's evolution, though, the set will premiere new material from the current three-piece lineup of founding saxophonist Sam Hillmer, ex-Liturgy drummer Greg Fox and guitarist Patrick Higgins. The trio are expected to drop both an LP and an EP sometime in 2013.
