Yngwie Johan Mamsteen

Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor

BY Kevin Stewart-PankoPublished Feb 1, 2000

Finally, Yngwie has recorded an album that, musically, is on par with his ego! The CD booklet is weighted down with biographical tidbits about the man's musical background and all the sweat and toil that went into creating this masterpiece. Plus, plenty of photos of Yngwie, his guitars, his hair and his insanely decorated cowboy boots. A fold-out poster too! Get one thing straight though; no one is really at liberty to question Malmsteen's ability as a guitarist. What's always been up for debate is whether or not he can write songs, as opposed to solos. He can’t. This record is an exercise in widdly-woo, look-at-me musicianship as Yngwie has constructed a compendious classical piece based on his penchant for sweep picking, neo-classical metal and ripping off Paganini. He's also constructed a sure-fire cure for all degrees of insomnia.
