WUNDERSTRANDS

'WUNDERSTRANDS' (album stream)

Mara Pellerin and Brad Kilpatrick are both members of St. John's indie rock outfit Gramercy Riffs, but they also have their own project called WUNDERSTRANDS. Their self-titled debut album will be out on May 29, and it's available to stream now on Exclaim.ca.

The project dates back to 2011, while Kilpatrick was touring as Hawksley Workman's drummer. He shared some of Pellerin's recordings with Workman, who said that he wanted to get involved; he served as the duo's mentor, and drummed on much of the record.

The album's eight organic-sounding tracks toe the line between atmospheric folk and moody rock. Opener "Tightrope Walker" begins the album with distorted electric tones and momentum-building melancholia. "Kate" also swells to cinematic climax, while songs like "You" and "Lines" are nocturnally gentle.

WUNDERSTRANDS will release their album in Toronto at the Rivoli on May 29. Until then, hear the record below. Workman will play as part of the live band.
