The troubled Woodstock 50 is set to kick off in a little over two weeks, and now organizers have said the festival will be entirely free to the public. Or at least, if the fest actually happens.
Woodstock 50 is now set to take place at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, on August 16 to 18 after being forced to relocate its festival site from New York. A festival rep has now told radio station WTOP in Washington, D.C., that the proposed three-day event would skip selling tickets altogether and make tens of thousands of tickets complimentary.
While there are still some major doubts if Woodstock 50 will actually happen at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Rolling Stone reports the event will indeed be complimentary.
An anonymous festival rep said all tickets would be for one-day-only admissions, explaining: "Tickets are for a single day. Tickets will be distributed through HeadCount, participating artists' foundations and local charitable partnerships in D.C. and Baltimore."
A rep for HeadCount confirmed to Rolling Stone that the non-profit would be the beneficiary, though Woodstock has shed few other details at this point.
Merriweather Post Pavilion operator Seth Hurwitz has also spoke to the media about Woodstock 50 shifting to become a free benefit-type event, saying the free ticketing model has been brought to his attention.
As previously reported, Woodstock 50 is currently without a lineup after the festival let all artists free of their contracts. This included big names like JAY-Z, Chance the Rapper, the Raconteurs, Sturgill Simpson, the Killers and many more.
This all comes in the wake of Woodstock 50 losing its original New York venue, getting rejected by its second much-smaller option and losing its main financier, which announced the festival was cancelled.
