Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden has died. He was 72.

According to a statement from his family, the musician "died peacefully" yesterday (August 24) with his wife, Fran, and daughters, Charlotte and Olivia, by his side. A cause of death has yet to be revealed.

"Bernie never lost his passion for music, writing and recording new songs until the end," they wrote.

Marsden wrote or co-wrote several of Whitesnake's hits, including "Here I Go Again," "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues," "Fool for Your Loving," "She's a Woman" and "Trouble." He formed the band in London in 1978 alongside the former Deep Purple singer David Coverdale and Micky Moody.

Coverdale paid tribute to his former bandmate in the post seen below. He remembers Marsden as a "genuinely funny, gifted man whom I was honoured to know and share a stage with."
