White Out w/ Jim O'Rourke and Thurston Moore

Senso

BY Bryon HayesPublished Nov 23, 2009

Senso finds the core White Out duo of drummer Tom Surgal and synth/autoharp wizard Linn Culbertson joined by Jim O'Rourke and Thurston Moore, a couple of gents who have their fingers in every pie when it comes to experimental rock. Featuring a pair of shows at NYC's now defunct Tonic, this double-CD is loaded with mammoth clouds of feedback and spirals of synthesized static. The first disc, "Fear of Fear (of Fear)," begins as a smouldering ember, building into a roaring blaze of chaotic free-improvisation as the four players get their wits about them. Sudden shifts in intensity are common; the group frequently drop out of earshot, only to return like a newly risen phoenix. The follow-up, "The Eyes The Mouth," is a devastating maelstrom of skittering drums and blizzard-like guitar/synth chaos. Pure energy has never sounded this great!
