The Welcome Wagon

Welcome to the Welcome Wagon

BY Eric HillPublished Dec 9, 2008

Whether you're welcoming in the Welcome Wagon because your need for a Presbyterian Reverend and Wife duo was un-satiated (unlikely) or because it was your thirst for a Sufjan Stevens album that needed slaking (probably), what you've got is mighty wonderful either way. The Rev. Vito Aiuto and wife Monique are optimistic and openhearted deliverers of songs that range from traditional hymns and spirituals to covers of numbers by the Danielson Famile and the Smiths. Through it all, said Mr. Stevens applies his soft but firm hand to the orchestration that's in part familiar to his fans, but with enough new tricks to guarantee goofy grins. Like many duos before them, Vito and Monique's voices are separately pleasant yet plain, but in combination creates warmth that un-knots the stomach. Those who fear proselytizing can rest easy. Even the most agnostic amongst us can occasionally celebrate.
